In the 1300s, monks built their libraries on floating rafts. If the canals flooded, the books floated to safety. Practical, if a little soggy.

When Apollo 11 landed on the moon, artist Yayoi Kusama covered her studio in polka dots and declared:

“If the earth disappears, I will fly to the moon.”

In 2021, one of her works finally did: it flew aboard a SpaceX rocket.
